Teeth Extractions

White Palm Dental
Melbourne, Florida

At White Palm Dental, we do everything we are capable of to repair damaged teeth, restoring their form and function. However, there are times when extracting a tooth is the only remaining option. When this is the case, Dr. McGavin and his dedicated team ensure you have the best possible experience while receiving an extraction.

You may need a tooth extraction to address:

  • Severe tooth decay or advanced periodontal disease
  • Irreparable tooth damage due to trauma
  • Overcrowding or orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth

Local anesthesia, sedation dentistry options, modern technology, and time-tested techniques will ensure you are comfortable during treatment.

What Can You Expect?

We perform tooth extractions under local anesthesia for your comfort. We also offer sedation dentistry options, if needed, to help you relax and feel calm during treatment.

There are two types of tooth extractions - simple and surgical. Dr. McGavin performs simple extractions to remove teeth that are visible above the gum line and are easily accessible. The procedure involves gently loosening the affected tooth and removing it with forceps.

Surgical extractions are more involved procedures required to remove impacted, broken, or fragile teeth or teeth with long, curved roots. Dr. McGavin may need to make a small incision in the gum and tissue to access and gently remove the tooth.

Is It Recommended to Extract Wisdom Teeth?

Yes, it is recommended to extract wisdom teeth in most cases because they are likely to eventually cause major problems for the patient. It is beneficial to have them extracted at a young age when they are easier to remove and the patient will heal more quickly and experience less complications. Dr. McGavin has had avanced training in wisdom teeth extractions and gained a lot of experience providing this treatment to young patients in the military.

What Is Ridge Preservation Bone Grafting?

After extracting a tooth, the jawbone starts reshaping and contouring. In most cases, we recommend a procedure known as “ridge preservation bone grafting.” This involves placing bone grafting material to rebuild and stabilize the bone in the area. Ridge preservation can help prevent bone loss and ensure the success of a dental implant, or dental bridge - leaving more treatments open for the future.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extractions?

  • They Relieve Your Discomfort: Extracting a severely damaged or painful tooth can provide instant pain relief.
  • They Protect Your Smile: Extracting an infected or diseased tooth can prevent the infection from spreading, safeguarding your oral health.
  • Correct Alignment Concerns: Selective tooth extractions can sometimes correct the bite and help ensure the success of orthodontic treatment.
  • Prevent Problems From Arising: In many cases, wisdom teeth will eventually cause major problems for the patient if not removed at a young age.

How Can You Promote Healing After a Tooth Extraction?

After extracting a tooth, the healing will begin, and a blood clot will start forming in the socket. Refrain from smoking, drinking from a straw, or spitting for at least 24 hours. Otherwise, you risk dislodging the clot, which may lead to a painful complication known as dry socket.

Make sure to follow our postoperative instructions to help promote healing. We may prescribe pain medications for use as needed in the days following your extraction. If you have any questions or concerns, make sure to let us know.
